Police vehicles rammed, suspect arrested

On January 9th, 2023, at 1:30 p.m., a frontline officer in Salmo, BC, spotted a stolen Toyota Tundra while on proactive patrol.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle on Railway St, but immediately fled toward Nelson at a high speed. Due to public safety concerns, the officer did not pursue.

Multiple officers set up a roadblock between Salmo and Nelson, BC.

The vehicle collided with three police vehicles, and an officer outside his patrol vehicle, and continued dangerously toward Nelson.

As officers attempted to use a spike belt, several civilian vehicles accidentally drove over it, resulting in damage, however no injuries.

The suspect vehicle was later found abandoned near the Nordic Ski Club. Officers, with help from a civilian and his snowmobile, were successful in located and arresting the suspect.

The officer struck by the suspect’s vehicle suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was later released from hospital.

The 42-year-old man from Trail, BC, was held in custody pending a bail hearing. Several charges, including assaulting a police officer, are being recommended to the BC Prosecution Service.
