File # 2021-162
Thanks to some very aware residents on School Road in Gibsons, RCMP have in custody a prolific property offender from the city.
On Thursday January 7, 2020 at 11:04 pm, Sunshine Coast RCMP members were called to a suspicious male jumping a fence and entering into a construction site in the 700 block of School Road in Gibsons, BC. With recent thefts of tools at construction sites, this was a priority response. Officers arrived and were directed to a male hiding in blackberry bushes behind the building. The male was arrested and identified as someone with an extensive history of property crime and was on conditions to abide by a curfew and be inside his residence in Surrey. The male was transported to Sechelt Detachment where he is currently in custody.
Officers were able to locate a vehicle associated and a temporary residence. Subsequent investigations lead officers to seize drugs and thousands of dollars of property, believed to be stolen from the Lower Mainland.
"The investigation is in it's infancy but this was a huge win for police. I've said it many times, police cannot do this without the help of the public and because of some very aware residents watching out for suspicious activity, we have recovered over $20,000 worth of possible stolen property and stopped more thefts and other offences" said Staff Sergeant Poppy Hallam.
"On behalf of the Sunshine Coast RCMP and the residents of Gibsons and the Sunshine Coast, thank-you to these sharp witnesses for calling 911 and keeping track of this man's movement for police. They did everything right and potentially saved more thefts on the Coast."
More information will be released as the investigation unfolds.
