File # 2020-8682

On December 17, 2020 at 3:30 pm, Sunshine Coast RCMP were notified by family members that a 74-year-old man with dementia had been missing from a residence in Gibsons for several hours.

Family members and police searched the area and reviewed surveillance video from a local business in an attempt to track his movements. Sunshine Coast Search and Rescue was notified and photos of the man were sent out to BC Transit so that bus drivers along the Sunshine Coast could watch out for him.

Within 15 minutes of receiving the photo and description of the man, sharp eyed local bus driver Matthew Evans saw the man walking several kilometres from where he had gone missing. Mr. Evans was able to provide information which helped officers to locate the man who thankfully was uninjured.

With colder temperatures and darker evenings, if this man had not have been found when he was it could have had a much more serious outcome, says Cst. Karen Whitby. We appreciate the help of Mr. Evans and everyone else who assisted in the search which thankfully resulted in the man being returned to his family.
