Kamloops peace officers will need more heart than hand warmers as they prepare for next week’s Special Olympics British Columbia fundraiser, the Polar Plunge.

On Feb. 22, 2023, at 11 a.m., in Pioneer Park on 7th Avenue, members of the Kamloops RCMP, Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement, Community Service Officer Program, Natural Resources, and other local supporters will brave the icy waters of the Thompson River to raise money and awareness for the exceptional athletes of the Special Olympics BC.

This year marks the first time the plunge will be taken by Kamloops RCMP Corporal David Tunbridge, who joked that he was tricked into agreeing to jump into the river.

I thought I was signing up for a pizza party, he laughed, when discussing his motivation to participate in this year’s annual Polar Plunge. In all seriousness though, it’s something I’ve watched my coworkers do for years and I’ve always appreciated and respected the commitment and dedication they’ve had for the Special Olympics. I’m happy to be the one to continue the tradition this year.

The Special Olympics BC works to enrich the lives of athletes with intellectual disabilities by providing sporting opportunities and competitions to help build and support their confidence, skills, and friendships.

Earlier this month, Kamloops played host to the 2023 Special Olympics BC Winter Games, which saw approximately 500 athletes complete from Feb. 2-4 at venues throughout the city.

Anyone who has ever witnessed a Special Olympics event knows how extremely talented and hardworking these exceptional athletes are, added Cpl. Tunbridge. That level of competition requires regular training and dedication, which is why it’s so important for the public to come out and support the Polar Plunge in person as a spectator, or if you can’t make it, financially as a sponsor.
